GMO ( Genetically Modified Organism)
What is a GMO? Are GMO foods safe? It’s an organism that has been genetically modified or been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. It’s a fairly new science and very controversial. The labs create unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
One outcome of genetically modifying a plant is to allow it to be drenched in poison and not have it die. But you and I still get to eat that poison. Do you think eating Roundup (the plant killer ) or also known as Glyphosate is a good idea? It is absorbed through the foliage. Some crops have been genetically engineered to be resistant to glyphosate (i.e., Roundup Ready, also created by Monsanto Company). So, farmers spray it all over their crops. The only thing that does not die, is the Genetically Modified Plants… that we are putting into our bodies. NO WONDER there is so much cancer.
High-Risk Crops (in commercial production; ingredients derived from these must be tested every time prior to use in Non-GMO Project Verified products (as of December 2011):
- Alfalfa (first planting 2011)
- Canola (approx. 90% of U.S. crop)
- Corn (approx. 88% of U.S. crop in 2011)
- Cotton (approx. 90% of U.S. crop in 2011)
- Papaya (most of Hawaiian crop; approximately 988 acres)
- Soy (approx. 94% of U.S. crop in 2011)
- Sugar Beets (approx. 95% of U.S. crop in 2010)
- Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash (approx. 25,000 acres)
- Read your ingredients. If you see any form of corn, there is a very good chance it’s been covered in poison before it went onto your table.
Our kids that eat a lot of processed foods are in for some real health problems. It’s a good thing there is a Cancer facility around every corner now. By mixing genes from totally unrelated species, genetic engineering unleashes a host of unpredictable side effects. Moreover, irrespective of the type of genes that are inserted, the very process of creating a GM plant can result in massive collateral damage that produces new toxins, allergens, carcinogens, and nutritional deficiencies.
Lastly, Most of the health and environmental risks of GMOs are ignored by governments’ superficial regulations and safety assessments. The reason for this tragedy is largely political. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for example, doesn’t require a single safety study, does not mandate labeling of GMOs, and allows companies to put their GM foods onto the market without even notifying the agency. Their justification was the claim that they had no information showing that GM foods were substantially different. But this was a lie. Secret agency memos made public by a lawsuit show that the overwhelming consensus even among the FDA’s own scientists was that GMOs can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects. They urged long-term safety studies. But the White House had instructed the FDA to promote biotechnology, and the agency official in charge of policy was Michael Taylor, Monsanto’s former attorney, later their vice president. He’s now the US Food Safety Czar.
This last graphic, to me, represents the amount of food that our society is taking in and that has been poisoned. We don’t have to boycott all these. We just need to get rid of Monsanto and their poisons. By the way, Monsanto, between 2.1 million and 4.8 million Vietnamese were exposed to dioxin during the war, according to the American Public Health Association, but it’s unknown how many of their children have ailments resulting from that exposure Vietnam, and Monsanto Ordered To Pay $93 Million For Poisoning Residents With Agent Orange.
